What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage is a firmer style of massage that targets deeper layers of muscle and fascia. It’s often chosen when you’re dealing with:

  • Stubborn tightness that keeps coming back
  • “Knots” or dense areas that don’t shift with lighter work
  • That locked-up feeling through shoulders, hips, or lower back
  • A body that’s doing a lot (desk work, parenting, physical work, training)

Many people find deep tissue massage helps them feel looser, freer in movement, and less “held” in their body after the session.

Who deep tissue massage may help (and when it’s a good fit)

Deep tissue massage can be a great option if you:

  • Sit at a desk and carry tension in your neck/shoulders/upper back
  • Do physical work (tradies, nurses, hospitality) and feel constantly tight
  • Train regularly and feel heavy through hips, glutes, calves, or upper back
  • Hold stress in your body and want a more targeted approach
  • Feel like you’ve tried relaxation-style massage and it wasn’t enough

Not sure whether you need deep tissue or remedial? No stress — we’ll guide you based on what you’re feeling and what your body responds to.

Does deep tissue massage hurt?

It shouldn’t feel like you’re being “punished.”

Deep tissue work can feel intense at times, but the goal is effective pressure that your body can actually relax into. We’ll check in, adjust, and work with your breathing and comfort level.

A good deep tissue session is usually:

  • Strong, but controlled
  • “Hurts good” at times, not sharp or alarming
  • Followed by relief, not regret

If you’re ever unsure, just say so — you’re always in control of the pressure.

Deep tissue massage vs remedial massage (what’s the difference?)

They can overlap, but here’s the simple version:

Deep tissue massage is typically:

  • Pressure-focused (firm, slow, targeted)
  • Great for stubborn tightness and “stuck” areas

Remedial massage is typically:

  • More assessment-led and problem-specific
  • Great for injuries, pain patterns, and targeted treatment plans

Sometimes your session will include both — deep work where you need it, with a remedial approach guiding why and how we treat.

Common focus areas

Deep tissue massage often targets:

  • Neck and shoulders (desk tension, stress load)
  • Upper back (that “armour” feeling)
  • Lower back (tightness from sitting, lifting, or long days)
  • Hips and glutes (running, gym, parenting, tradie bodies)
  • Legs and calves (training, standing all day)

Tell us what’s been feeling tight or restricted lately — we’ll tailor the session around that.

What to expect in your session at Fullon Life

Before your session
A quick chat about what’s been going on, what you want out of the massage, and what pressure you prefer.

During
We’ll work slowly and deliberately, checking in so the pressure stays productive (not overwhelming). You can be quiet, chatty, or somewhere in between — your call.

After
It’s normal to feel a little tender in areas we’ve worked deeply. Most people feel looser and more mobile, with a “lighter” body over the next day or two.

Aftercare: what to do after deep tissue massage

To get the most out of your session, many people find it helps to:

  • Drink extra water
  • Keep movement gentle (a walk is perfect)
  • Avoid smashing a huge workout immediately after (if you can)
  • Use heat for general tightness (or follow any specific guidance we give)

If you’ve got a big event/training session coming up, tell us — we’ll plan the intensity accordingly.

How often should you book deep tissue massage?

It depends on how quickly your body loads up, but a common rhythm is:

  • Every 2–4 weeks for maintenance
  • Weekly/fortnightly short-term if tension is chronic and you’re trying to shift it
  • Monthly if you’re generally okay but want to stay on top of it

We’ll help you choose something realistic — not perfect.

We keep things simple, respectful, and tailored—so you feel comfortable and confident from the start.

1) Quick check-in

We’ll chat about what you’ve been doing lately, what you’d like help with, and what a “good result” looks like for you.

2) Assessment

Depending on what’s going on, we may use basic movement or postural checks to guide the session, or dig in deeper.

3) Treatment

Your session may include a mix of techniques such as deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, or more —based on what suits you best on the day.

4) Simple next steps

If it’s helpful, you’ll leave with a straightforward plan—like suggested booking frequency and a couple of easy self-care pointers you can actually use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is deep tissue massage the same as sports massage?
They can be similar in pressure, but sports massage is often more performance/recovery focused. If you’re training or dealing with post-training tightness, tell us — we’ll tailor the session to suit.
Some tenderness can be normal after deeper work, especially if the area was very tight. It should feel manageable — if you want a gentler session, we can absolutely do that.
